School Profile

Mount Pleasant Area Junior-Senior High School is a combination of a two grade level junior high and four year comprehensive high school with approximately 950 students in grades seven through twelve.  The secondary building was opened in 1965 as a jointure of Mount Pleasant Township Hurst and Mount Pleasant Ramsay High Schools.  Located in the beautiful Laurel Highlands, MPA Jr-Sr HS is located approximately 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, PA.

In addition to three counselors and three administrators, the professional staff at MPA Jr-Sr HS includes approximately 60 classroom teachers.  Over half the teachers have ten or more years professional experience in curriculum and instruction.  Another 20 employees in a range of clerical, custodial, food service, technical, and other support positions bring the total secondary staff to near 100.

Classes are arranged on a traditional nine period schedule with an activity period at the end of the day.  Each class period is 40 minutes long.  The schedule rotates elective courses on an A/B daily schedule.  The 25 minute daily activity period allows professional staff to meet weekly and for students to participate in extra curricular activities or seek remediation and enrichment opportunities from staff.  Three lunches serve all students and students are given four minutes for passing periods between classes.

Mount Pleasant Area High School has a long history of service to its community and a respected tradition of excellence in academics, athletics, performing arts, and other technical competitive events.  MPAHS is annually recognized by US News and World Report as a Best High School and in recent years, MPAHS has been recognized by GenCon for Financial Literacy and Common Sense Media as a Certified Digital Citizenship School.  MPASD is recognized annually as a NAMM Best Communities for Music Education. MPA students consistently perform well in academic competitions such as BotsIQ, SkillsUSA, PMEA District 1 Band, Quiz League, and Mock Trial.  In recent years, the Vikings have been successful at the PIAA level, winning team state championships in softball (2017, 2021), and girls swimming (2023) and individual gold medalists in wrestling, swimming, and track & field. The school culture supports our academic traditions in the mature attitudes of its students and their pride in their school.  Over 80% of students in recent years have gone on to enroll in some post-secondary college or university.

The school's overall philosophy recognizes the all students deserve the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential in an atmosphere of self-disciplined behavior and encourages and inspires students to think logically, creatively, and effectively for the benefits of themselves, our community, and society.
